Topper Headon in depth interview
Not for the first time Topper Headon has given a new interview, but nothing as extensive as this. Big thanks to Mikedolbear.com for coordinating, transcripting and publishing what is simply a superb interview with the former Clash drummer. I’ve said in earlier posts that not only do I feel Topper was so very critical in the development of The Clash but also that the decision to sack him was the first major rung on the downfall of the band. All these years later it’s easy with hindsight to say perhaps The Clash should have regrouped while Topper got the treatment he so obviously needed, but we have what we have and it’s a band that went out at the very top. A point that Topper makes in the interview.
I have to praise Steve Grantley for preparing so well for the interview which obviously brings out the best in Headon and you can sense the enthusiasm that he brings to his responses. If you are a drummer or know something about drumming the first third will enthrall you as Topper explains how ‘untrained’ he was as a drummer and that he feels it was just something he was gifted with. The interview delves deep into The Clash and his place in the band and friends/friendship is a recurring theme. For those who’ve downplayed the Clash as a manufactured group of 4 separate egos I think (once again) that this interview dispels it. From my vantage point The Clash were so busy and so committed that a gang sensibility took over – the band and their immediate ‘personnel’ drew in a circle as they led a charge that resulted in an amazing output in such a short time.
“We were all really great mates at that time – we were really tight as friends. We loved each other’s company, we played lots of football and the music was taking off”
Topper Headon
Topper doesn’t dodge questions, his ownership of what became his addiction is honest and heartfelt. His pain is tangible as you realise that something he was born to do (drum) was smothered by his heroin addiction. It was a long path back for Headon and I can’t express how great it is to see him feeling alive again – worthwhile again – and one of the greatest drummers who ever was – again.
Simply remarkable interview – worth every minute of your time – essential reading for any Clash Fan. Get to it!!!
