Top Clash Songs – Seeded 16 (nearly) announced
Good Evening -I’ve totted up all the votes and 14 of the 16 Clash songs to be seeded are now official. It’s a bloody good 14 as well – but we have a four way tie for number 15,16 so I need some help with that.
All the build up and explanation for this Top Clash Songs / Clash Cup appeared back on July 24 - but taking part is still very much in your hands. Every Clash song not seeded (in the top 16) will now take part in a knock out – one song pitted against another with a 48 hour voting window on each. I’ve got to get out the old spreadsheet and calculator and some songs which received good support at the seeding stage will get a bye to the next round. I know this all sounds cumbersome – but basically from Aug 12th onward you will need to (if you want to) vote for a favourite Clash song daily. It’ll make sense…and the poll addition to the blog seems to be working (see the right margin of this page).
So on to the top 14 – some songs I really did expect but also a few surprises popped up. 75 different Clash songs made people’s top 10 ten lists which I think is amazing in itself. The band’s history was also well represented but the debut album / period got more support than London Calling which shocked me. It could be that picking two or three of the best songs from London Calling was too tricky. The poll was taken part in via email – third party forums and comments here on the blog – and votes came from far and wide – here’s the 14 in order of votes received:
(White Man) in Hammersmith Palais
Complete Control
Straight To Hell
Safe European Home
Police and Thieves
Rudie Can’t Fail
Garageland
Clampdown
Washington Bullets
Up In Heaven
One More Time
London Calling
Armagideon Time
Janie Jones
I think you have to say it’s a formidable list – and amazing that London Calling and it’s B side both appear. Now to settle that 4 way tie for places 15 and 16. These four tracks all received 12 votes (not a bad showing) but only 2 can be added to the list: Stay Free, Spanish Bombs, Death or Glory and Bankrobber. My thinking is I’ll run the poll below for 2 days and announce the final 2 tracks on Thursday. So please get clicking – I’ll get it started!
Which Clash Song Stays in The Clash Cup? Round 2 match 5
- Jail Guitar Doors (34%, 19 Votes)
- Police On My Back (66%, 37 Votes)
Total Voters: 56
Thanks for taking part – the fun bit is still to follow. Tim

The problem is Tim that they’re ALL better than a couple of the ones which are already seeded ! You’re going to pit fan vs. fan on this one. Let battle commence !!
I can’t comment….40% of my top ten was nowhere to be seen…..
I was listyening to Spanish Bombs the other day and kicking myself for not including on my top ten. So I am happy to have had the chance to vote for it here! If you are a fan of this song make sure you check out the live version from the Shea Stadium cd; Mick’s harmonies and guitar work are gorgeous. Trivia about the song, for those who didn’t know: Spanish Bombs was both Joe and Mick’s favorite song to play live—Joe being enamored with lyrics about his beloved Spain, and Mick enjoying playing the lovely guitar line.
I’m glad my top 2 songs are top 2 here (in reverse order for me)! xxx
[...] This poll showed why The Clash have appeal across the board if nothing else. After the initial voting four songs were all level with 12 votes. After 3 more days we’ve managed to get Death or Glory into the 16 seeded category – but beyond that would you believe another draw/tie further down the list. No song dominated but it ended like this. [...]
[...] for the less than serious nature of this update…for something more hard hitting may I suggest you take part in the Clash Cup voting which has a day to run and is still a close run thing. If you know of any other Strummer [...]
[...] to get 16 songs seeded (protected from) the early knockout stages. That was quite a battle and gave us these 16 eventually after more voting. So we won’t be seeing those ’seeded’ tracks again for quite a while until we [...]
