The Clash Cup – Matches 5 & 6
The search for the best ever Clash songs continues – and I’m getting straight to the draw. This is the round of 128 (well…142) songs and we need to move right along. So matchup 5 and 6 are
I Fought The Law vs Let’s Go Crazy
Which Clash Song Stays in The Clash Cup? Round 2 match 10
- The City of the Dead (45%, 30 Votes)
- Justice Tonight/Kick It Over (55%, 37 Votes)
Total Voters: 67
Guns On The Roof vs Death Is A Star
Which Clash Song Stays in The Clash Cup? Round 2 match 11
- Four Horsemen (32%, 19 Votes)
- English Civil War (68%, 39 Votes)
Total Voters: 59
A couple of matchups that look pretty unfair but votes so far have generally been closer than I expected. Speaking of which we are down to 16 hours to vote on these earlier ’bouts’ one of which is very close- first results tomorrow! I’m sure you know all of today’s 4 songs so I’ll try and add a little trivia if I can.
I Fought The Law is of course a cover version of a Sonny Curtis song originally written 50 years ago! The original track had little renown until it was covered by Bobby Fuller 7 years later in 1966. Fuller sadly committed suicide (although that’s been refuted) at the same time the song became a hit. The Clash however made it their own and many may not have heard the original version.
Let’s Go Crazy – a calypso and reggae tinged song about the Notting Hill Carnival and featuring steel drums, great lyrics and (for me) is a bit of an overlooked gem.
Guns on the Roof is worthy of it’s own story, and will get one at a later date. Death is a Star was a maudlin Strummer track from side 2 of Combat Rock. I’ve always seen it as a goodbye of sorts. Get voting!
