Was Damon Albarn the catalyst to the B.A.D. reunion?

Hello hello, thanks for stopping by once more or indeed for your first visit in which case you’ve got some catching up to do. I hope your week has gone well, I can’t complain but am glad for the arrival of the weekend at last.

One small thing for now and a dedicated effort for a follow up post later if I don’t die from heat exhaustion playing football. If you cast your minds back about 16 months there was a lot of chatter when the video appeared that showed not only Paul Simonon (which wasn’t a huge shock due to TGTBaTQ) but also Mick Jones were involved in the then forthcoming Gorillaz album. Of course one thing led to another, a huge tour followed and by the end of 2010 Jones and Simonon had spent the better part of the entire year with Damon Albarn and the rest of that nautical crew. I of course was very happy, leaping at the chance to see two members of The Clash share the same stage for the first time since 1983 but I accepted my endorsement was more pronounced than many as I also had been a follower of Albarn since the early days of Blur almost two decade prior. Others saw the decision as questionable at best and embarrassing at worst although I maintained that if they were enjoying it and were invigorated by the involvement then surely it was on balance a good thing, it was never a case of ‘where is the similarity between Guns on the Roof and Melancholy Hill?’. That debate was as misplaced as comparing the later sound of B.A.D. in relation to The Clash.

Especially after reading that Damon Albarn influenced by B.A.D. years back but also was present when they played in London this spring was he perhaps a catalyst in the reformed band getting back on stage this year after such a long hiatus. It seemed unlikely after so many years but there were also rumours that it (the reunion) was on the cards before Damon was working with Mick. Thus I was interested to see that according to this recent interview excerpt in the San Francisco Examiner it was Damon’s admiration of or inspiration from Mick’s earlier work that planted the seed for a B.A.D. reunion. Although the article infers that more than takes a direct quote from Jones which would have been more useful. Either way I think it’s very likely and further illustrates just how beneficial last year’s sojourn with Gorillaz turned  out to be. I’d be curious if anyone can recall reading or hearing a quote from Mick this year that clarifies exactly that.

Moreover I think it certifies the fact that not only is Damon Albarn a talented and observant musician but it spells out just how many ceilings B.A.D. were breaking in the 1980′s. Of course George Clinton and other black musicians were crossing those lines between funk and rock before B.A.D. but Jones alongside the ideas of Don Letts reversed those tides and broke a lot of ground for white musicians with sampling and rap being added to a more conventional rock set up, by all means a continuation of the experimentation he craved and drove while with The Clash. Thus a nod not only to Damon for reminding Mick about the importance of B.A.D. but also a reminder that Albarn told Mick what we could have years ago, he could and should have continued with B.A.D. in the first place. Ultimately I’m glad Mick feels inspired to keep playing and hopefully recording too.

Weird fact of the week, a retail chain (half price books and music) I was in this weekend have large stocks of factory sealed copies of The Clash (debut reissue) for $5.58 and The Essential Clash for $11.48, not sure where Sony pulled these from, perhaps Borders? They get some interesting items in there at really low prices…anyway, that’s all for now. Thanks for reading.

This is London Guv

What a fuzzy Sunday morning, feels like my head was placed in a shoebox all night with a small speaker blaring out a bad mix tape of The Sisters of Mercy, Kraftwerk and some Moby. I’d be satisfied if this were the result of a hangover but no such luck, perhaps I took a Rooney style elbow to the head when playing football yesterday and just forgot about it. Whilst I was playing football yesterday and based on the photo and video evidence submitted it seems Big Audio Dynamite were burning down the house in Shepherds Bush last night. This tour is fast becoming one that might end up being folklore especially if it is the only B.A.D. tour we see, the positive vibes and reviews are raining down and the sense of something positive going on during what, let’s face, it has been a really shit year in terms of other news/events. Part of me wishes there weren’t summer festivals to follow and this return was more like a comet to be enjoyed by those with good timing but I’ll reserve judgment for now. I hope to have a very special guest review of the first London concert for you later so for now I’d like to hand you over to some of our BAD reports from the field.

Also, just hours before the gig our resident London photographic contributor extraordinaire Pete was struggling to get to the Saturday night concert so I wasn’t sure we would have the visual documents of such a great night. Seems that via the brilliant network that are Clash people Pete was met by Don Letts and was able to get access to all the key areas on the night. I’m thrilled about that and the visual evidence is partly on this post but I’ll put together a post today or tomorrow that features just photos from Shepherds Bush.

“”2AM. Post pub, obligatory kebab which are better in Manchester {*CLASHBLOG- Whatever…and you’re also more likely to get it nicked out of your hands} and post Big Audio Dynamite at Shepherds Bush ( which was even better than Liverpool – is this possible?). They are truly superb live. Same set except Other 99 added in as well. Cmon Every Beatbox, The Bottom Line and E=mc2 (and all the rest) highlights. The whole place was absolutely rocking – everyone out their seats up in the gods. This has to be one of the greatest comebacks / reunions / returns / whatevers…..
As for MJ – he doesn’t look funny when he’s 50 – he’s indestructible – remember this and do not try to imitate him!
I never thought I’d be watching all this 25 years on – a big thank you to B.A.D.”

“Great Saturday gig at the Bush. Got myself one of those caps I’ve wanted for 25 years! Excellent selection of songs, something for everyone, will we see Limbo The Law at future gigs? Back again tonight!”

“”Been a Clash fan since the early days and met Joe once after a Mescalero’s gig at HMV Oxford Street when they were promoting their 2nd album. It was a great experience and one that I will treasure all my life. However last night beat that experience. I went to the BAD concert at Shepherds Bush and had tickets for level 1. I was a bit disappointed not to have tickets for the ground floor as I prefer the buzz of the standing section. But am I glad that I had those tickets now. Standing in the bar before the band took the stage I saw Damon Albarn first and then Paul Simonon. I went over to talk to Paul and he was just the nicest guy. I can’t believe how talkative and friendly he was. So humble. Honestly I am still buzzing from the experience. It’s like if I had a dream about meeting him he would have been just like that. Usually in life you expectations are rarely met but last night they were exceeded. I will always love the Clash for what they gave me. That love has just grown 10 fold after last night. As a side note we went to the gig from Edgware Road tube and as I went into the subway it was called Joe Strummer subway…had no idea…amazing…just capped off a fantastic day. And by the way, the band were fantastic”

There’s also been a number of ‘proper’ reviews but I think I’ll compile those later as another post as I’m running out the door now…thanks again for sending in your impressions it’s really appreciated. A special thank you to Pete for the live photographs. Tim

Video Clash Vol 8 – Kampuchea, Notting Hill and New Years Eve

kampuchea Video Clash Vol 8 Kampuchea, Notting Hill and New Years EveGood evening everyone, cheers for stopping in at the blog. I seem to remember making commitments to keeping some of the regular features on the blog rotated on a more frequent/consistent basis but not for the first time a combination of other interesting news or my own sense of chaos seems to have prevented me from fulfilling that. In this electronic age I really should be far more organised than I am when it comes to the blog, but what I’ve determined that what I really need to do is purchase an old fashioned paper calendar to remind myself of tasks. Between work and the various blogs and projects I try and maintain eight email accounts to which I often email myself reminders, only to find my reminders are often opened a day or two after intended. Does this happen to you too? Is my technical skill level permanently going to reside in 2004….will a smart phone somehow make me feel less saturated or more so? Answers via email…no…scratch that…

One ‘regular’ feature on the blog was/is Video Clash which I just noticed I haven’t managed to get to now for sixty days which in itself is impressive in a ‘just what have I been writing about the last two months?’ sort of way. I realised today when I finally got around to adding the first video beneath to the facebook page. So…standards are as ever that these are more recently uploaded Clash related videos to YouTube, Vimeo, Daily Motion et al that I hope most of you have not seen before. I’m sure you’ve seen some perhaps but I’d sincerely doubt all unless you’ve simply got too much time on your hands. My loose commitment as of today is to try and run through these a few times per month. Or…once a month at the very least.

Mick Jones with Rotten Hill Gang at the Tabernacle on New Year’s Eve 2010/11: This video reminded me just how overdue my update was for the blog. Mick as ever looks as happy as the proverbial at the tail end of what was a very busy and travel filled year for Mr. Jones. While I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that ‘Should I Stay..’ remains a huge crowd-pleaser do you think it’s often chosen as a sing along when Mick appears because the band he guests with tend to know the song or that the crowd aren’t anticipating Atom Tan? The Tabernacle (that I’m not familiar with) incidentally is tucked away behind Westbourne Park Road, Ladbroke Grove (West London).

The Clash at the Concert for the People of Kampuchea: While I’ve read and written a great deal about this appearance at the Hammersmith Odeon on December 27, 1979  I’ve never handed over the cash to own the video nor the DVD that (I think) was released later by Miramax. This was The Clash right on the cusp of a new decade and an album (London Calling) that while receiving favourable press had many asking exactly what had happened to The Clash as a punk rocker’s concern. This stunning version of Armagideon Time shows a band that have the song as fresh in their repertoire as can be….still (to this writer) the best later Clash song never to make it on a studio album by the band. Can you imagine (or perhaps some of you actually) did have tickets for that evening and then the following which featured The Specials, The Pretenders and The Who? Heady days indeed.

Chap ranting about Mick and Paul’s time with Gorillaz: This shows that you can upload anything whatsoever to YouTube. I don’t have time to explain this video although I wish that chap watched the AOL sessions instead of ASL? It’s funny on balance…does he have a guitar plectrum in his mouth perhaps? I know that his opinions were shared by many when Paul and Mick were added to the tour roster but I think the tide gradually turned after concerts were attended and Paul and Mick showed what a great time they had. Damian (sic) Albarn has been warned….

Notting Hill Carnival mini-documentary: In the dark days of winter the Notting Hill Carnival seems a long way off but this short documentary might cure your midwinter blues. Loads of great vintage footage and a Clash provided soundtrack kicks off about half way into the video. Old newsreels and modern video from the carnival peppered with some clips from the White Riot inspiring events in the summer of ’76.

That’s all I have time for this evening…your thoughts, ideas and suggestions all welcomed. If you prefer a debate about gun control you can join that (already in progress) on my other blog….sigh. Thanks for swinging by…more tomorrow I’d say.
