Rich Kids reunion this Thursday with Mick Jones, Tony James and many more

Good Morning, 2010 officially has some pixie dust or solar magic mixed in as I just watched mighty Manchester United fall to the formerly mighty Leeds United, based on that its shaping up to be 1973 all over again (not sure I like the sound of that though). Right this isn’t a football blog so let me get my bearings.

richkids Rich Kids reunion this Thursday with Mick Jones, Tony James and many moreAlso in the 1970′s the Rich Kids briefly were a going concern (in 1977) and featured Glen Matlock from the Sex Pistols and Midge Ure (post Slik but later Ultravox). Glen’s friend Mick Jones also played with the band though he was apparently never at risk of leaving The Clash. The Rich Kids went on to release three singles and one album but were wound up by the end of 1978. Fast forward to 2010 and the band are reforming for a special one off event at the Islington Academy in London this Thursday January 7th. The concert is a benefit for former guitarist Steve New (who is suffering from an illness) and the line up will feature Glen Matlock, Midge Ure, Steve New and Rusty Egan.

Its turning into a bit of an all star turnout however as Mick Jones and Tony James from Carbon Silicon will be the opening act, that has additional interest as it will be the first chance to hear some of the new album material performed live (I assume…not sure). There’s more guests promised also and the list now includes The Illuminations (featuring Clive Langer, Steve Allen and Ian Broudie), TV Smith (from the Adverts), Viv Albertine & Patti Paladin and Gary Kemp (from The Slits/Spandau Ballet). Talk about a who’s who from 1977-1978 (and beyond). I’m not sure what the contributions from some of the other will be but a chance to share a pint at the bar with TV Smith or Viv is surely worth getting up to Islington for (if you’re in London or nearby). Tickets are priced at £17.50 and its for a good cause – so get along to it and tell me how it goes!

    Happy new year Tim,
I’m heading to the Rich Kids bash and will hopefully stay away from the bar long enough to write something for ya – part 3 of the camden is out there but rubbish as gin and tonic took over somewhat….I’ve given it to a mutual friend to read up and tidy up a bit but like the rest of us he’s been mad busy and i’m not sure its any good anyway.
i dunno if you’re still in uk and going to RichKids but if you are we must hook up and I’ll foist some silly stu artwork on ya – if not I’ll let you know how it all goes – All The Best And a belated happy new year to you and all who sail on the good ship ClashBlog!
    Love Stu

    Hi Tim,

The mutual friend of whom Stu speaks is ME ! Apologies for the delay. There just hasn’t been time for me to have a go at it. I’ve not forgiven him yet for the denim/Status Quo joke from Part 1 – only joking Stu !!
Had to smile at the Mancs misfortune too. I can still remember that Bournemouth match from 1984….

    Best wishes, Pete

  5. Hello Pete….

I had a feeling!!!! I remember that match in ’84 as well as our lot losing to Wrexham a while back. No great love for Leeds but it was a great game to watch eh?

Quo just got knighted…did that soften the blow?

    Tim

Well , what a fantastic night at the Rich Kids bash. You be pleased to know that Carbon Silicon were back with a bang – only four songs – Global War on Culture, The News, Why do men fight and What the fuck. All delivered with fun and energy which reminded me why this band is soooooo SPECIAL . A very special mention for Rusty Egan who guested on drums and was so powerful – highlight being his magnificent performance on the News – wow did he give some welly. An awesome Why do Men fight also deserves a mention – a good old rambling epic – like the old Carbon Silicon days – went on for ages but totally captivating. Other highlights of the evening include Viv Albertine (God she looks good – Oil of Ulay adds next surely?) wooing the crowd with “Confesions of a Milf” , Ian Broudie and Glen Matlock with The Illusions belting through Wreckless Eris’s Whole Wide World, Glen again with Patti Palladin leading a singlaong – ohhh so many great moments…… As for the Rich Kids – well what can i say – they played with enormous energy and it was hard to believe they hadn’t been together for 30 odd years. Another special mention for Midge Ure who’s vocals were outstanding. Most enjoyable though was seeing these guys having such a great time – it was quite touching. Encores were A Rousing All or Nothing with the band being joined by Mick Tj and Gary Kemp and having a generally riotous time finishing with an absolutely belting Rich Kids – honestly it was fantastic and I feel so lucky to have been there – God these old punk rockers Know how to put on a show, have a laugh , and create a brilliant atmosphere – I’m proud to say thats my kinda music. It was also nice to see Pete the Snapper albeit briefly and i noticed with disappointment the demin quota was at a more manageable level than the Breaking Rocks bash in October – mind you who am i to talk – it was so cold i had a cardigan on under my jacket – so Val Donican jibes my way next time Pete! I’ll try and write this up properly when i get a moment but hopefully this’ll give a bit of an idea – all the best – Stu
