Radio Clash (internet) A Clash Fan's guide to online music/radio

As someone who spends a lot of time working at my computer I need access to music, almost all of the time. My CD collection has admittedly grown like government US debt and spun a bit out of control. Though I’ve several thousand CDs a few feet from my desk I don’t always need all six speakers disrupting the house so I use my computer.

Radio Radio

This next part will either make sense or not dependent on your age. I’m 42 now, on the cusp of the new frontier for how people collect and listen to music. I still buy CDs, I don’t own an ipod, I don’t download music. I consider myself fairly computer savvy and it’s not even about the technology for me. I liked records…a lot…I liked the artwork, the lyrics and the ownership aspect of buying an album. I reluctantly moved to CDs. I liked knowing some small part of my purchase was ending up in the pocket of the person who wrote and recorded the song. I’ve reluctantly accepted that downloading music isn’t going anywhere. I feel people who just take music without paying are stealing from the artists. Going to a good record shop to me is still as close to nirvana as it gets for me.

That’s not why I wrote this piece though – I wanted to write about the wide range of choices now available online to essentially build your own online radio station and play what you want (plus additional songs you should like). Some services are amazing, some are decent and all are worth checking out. There are more than 20 solutions and I’ve used about 6 or 7, I’ll check out the remainder and rate them based on features/ease of use and the Clash Factor. This will be a fun series and will greatly improve your enjoyment of online music while you read The Clash Blog. Part one soon!
