Joe Strummer’s Birthday – video special, final show November 2002
Aug 21st, 1952 – Ankara, Turkey. John Mellor is born and 24 years later Joe Strummer has helped to form The Clash.
I don’t have much to add to my post from earlier except to express that it has been an emotional and touching day to see how many people are remembering Joe in equally strong and sincere fashion. I can’t help but think Joe would grin if he saw how much he was missed and yet feel honoured that his commitment to what he cared about is still being felt by so many people.
You may have seen this video today – although I hope not – I’m extremely excited to share it via the blog. My sincere thanks to Steve Kirk who is allowing the blog to share the video below just for Joe’s Birthday celebrations. I can’t write words to do this justice. Joe’s final two songs on stage in Liverpool exactly one month before we lost him. It made me cry a lot, without regret – and then grin at how he inspired and really did seem to say goodbye even as that final line ‘A riot of my own’ was still echoing around the hall.
Happy Birthday Joe – from all of us. You made such a difference and still do.
Please note the access to the video beneath will end on Aug 22 at noon GMT. I’ll beg and borrow to try and include it again in December!

Bloody effing brilliant.
All those voices singing in unison…soul stirring. I love Joe’s birthday way more than my own ~ such an inspiring day.
How I miss him!
Gosh, I really love this video…
Thank you Steve and Tim for sharing this video, touching and inspiring, just like Joe.
A poet. And everybody should know it!
Hi Steve (Kirk)
You’re probably already at the venue in Gosport for tonight’s gig. Thanks so much for letting Tim post this video. I’ve just vacated The Garage in Islington, after watching The Chords soundcheck, just before 56,000 jubilant Gooners invade the Holloway Road….Apparently they won this afternoon against…..er..Blackpool.
The video says it all as Joe launches into ‘White Riot’ for the final time…
“Let’s give it all we’ve got !”
No half measures. No compromise. Joe Strummer 100%.
Pete,
London
awesome video makes you realise how good he was
Can’t find the words. This is so sad and yet so… AWESOME. Many thanks for sharing this video with us. And if those people there, singing along, only knew…
