I was 17, and was a big Who/Townshend fan. I was into the Clash too, but make no mistake, everyone was there to see the Who. I was very close to the stage and I remember telling my buddy let's "go" get something to drink when the Clash was playing "Should I Stay or Should I Go". I do recall the sound mix was not that great either. The Who rocked, and I was within 100 feet of Pete for the Who show. They sounded great to me and my ears rang for several days after. The Silverdome was great to see a football game, not so much to see a concert, but there is something to be said about seeing a concert with that many people indoors, lot's of energy! I caught Joe Strummer later in 1988 at a small club in downtown Detroit. I enjoyed it but I do remember Joe railing against Mick a lot.

Thanks Darrel, I wondered who might have been at that one. Funny the reception was so bad because in some ways Detroit can claim to be at least a part owner of the origins of punk in my opinion.

Tim,

Thanks for the write on the 1982 Silverdome show. I was at this show and it was the first that I attended with a group of friends. We were all huge Who fans and really into The Clash for about 2-3 years. Punk was not a big thing in Detroit at the time and The Clash were actually booed, which killed us. I think they actually cut there set short because of the bad reception. I'm sure there were much more punk fans than just us there, but we were out numbered. We definitely knew we were witnessing history in the Who's first farewell tour and The Clash perhaps not coming our way again. I ended up enjoying The Clash more than The Who, because the energy was there. BTW, The Silverdome was a terrible place to see a show and its a good thing its gone, other than what its done to Pontiac. Cheers.

Nice post. Brings back memories. I was there that evening and there's something you don't realize about what happened that night. First of all, The Clash didn't get anywhere near 45 minutes and into Should I Stay the crowd screamed "GO!!" and the band pleaded with everyone to give them a chance. The band was frustrated and the crowd was loving it. They stopped midway through that tune. This happended for one simple reason that had nothing to do with The Clash: It was at one time a bit of a cherished tradition here in the D to boo whomever opened for The Who (Eddie Money got by because the place wasn't full yet). Toots and Maytalls got the same treatment in 1975 (I was there for that one too), lasting only about five minutes of unendurable screaming to get off the stage, but that had been occuring since the late 60's. We came to see The Who. No one else would do. That sort of thing. At today's ticket prices, it doesn't happen anymore. Besides, the boys are graybeards now and so are most of us. But those were the days. And yes, the place was fun for spectacle, but terrible for music. If you were in the upper deck the reverb off the roof was incredibly bad.

[...] Clash Landmarks, The Pontiac Silverdome Good Morning all. Woke up at 4:10am today like a bleeding 6 year old waiting for Father Christmas to do his thing. What am I doing up so early? For starters I went to sleep early for once (1030) and I’m also a bit anxious about a football match in Manchester in a few hours. I’m sure the motorway is jammed right now as both sets of fans make the long drive North from London. Speaking of football, it’s time for another in our Clash Landmarks series. Football also operates in the States, but [...]
