Good bloody evening to Clash people around the world. I don’t mean to moan but I’m extremely sick of the hot weather here…I realise we don’t get earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, deep freezes, volcanoes, tornadoes, floods or other unpleasant weather here but today marks the eighth straight day of daytime highs that have reached 113f or higher. The back garden officially reached 121f in the sun the other day. By dawn it’s still around 92f so I’m sick of being warm and essentially warm. I haven’t played football or cycled for about two weeks either so I feel like a dried out piece of something very dried out…. Complaints over, that isn’t why you visited the site. Oh…also….the Clash Blog dog managed to snap her claw into two pieces on her front leg running around the back garden on Saturday night which resulted in a (warm) trip to the emergency vet which not only kept us out until 2am but cost $400. I can think of better things to do on a Saturday night….happily the dog is doing very well and has an enviable supply of drugs to keep her grinning.

Right, back to things which make me smile. This update is long overdue but I managed to fall behind with the ongoing B.A.D. tour, Joe Strummer birthday and a general pile of work of my own (yes there’s work to do even at Clash Blog Towers) so this sat on my ‘in pile’ for far too long. When Big Audio Dynamite played at First Avenue in Minneapolis on August 7th I was fortunate enough to have two of my most intrepid friends attending the show so they were given the task of tracking down Mick Jones and asking him a handful of questions on behalf of The Clash Blog. If you knew these two – Scott and Jessica – you’d know I couldn’t have tasked such a project to two more suitable people. S & J until recently lived here in Phoenix and we attended stacks of concerts together. Scott never tires of concerts and we’ve seen some incredibly good (Arcade Fire in front of less than 200 people in a venue smaller than my house) and memorably poor (The Fall, with Mark E Smith getting in a fight with the support act and leaving the stage after just two songs, never to return – wanker) concerts together.  They’ve bumped into Mick a fair few times before – seeing Carbon Silicon in Los Angeles and at the Carbon Casino in London and Scott also saw B.A.D. back in the long ago 1980′s. (Jessica was still in grade school at that time – hah!)

Anyway, we spoke the afternoon of the concert and I asked Scott if he could possibly try and get me a signed setlist by Mick and also try and ask Mick a few questions on my behalf. Scott loves such a challenge and I assumed he’d manage to get a result, which indeed he did. After the gig, which they both said was excellent with the exception being that S&J felt the bass completely dwarfed the guitar in the mix, they began their mission.

It was easier than normal with Mick making a prolonged appearance at the merchandise stall along with his Mum (!!) who regular Clash followers will know has lived in the states since Mick was a young boy – to the best of my knowledge she lives east of Duluth in upstate Michigan which (in American terms) made Minneapolis a relatively near concert to see her little boy Mick coming through town with B.A.D. Scott told me that Mick was extremely patient with the fans, fulfilling requests for autographs and photos to all those who asked. After waiting patiently for some time Scott put on his junior reporter hat and introduced himself to Mick and said he had some questions from The Clash Blog!

Hello again, it’s nearly 5am London time on the Sunday so I’ve no qualms with officially considering this time to say recognise Joe Strummer’s Birthday. I’m hoping you’ll all help me make this post as interactive as the one we did together during the less cheerful December anniversary eight months ago. Today is a day to be glad that we were were exposed to Joe Strummer, whether we first saw The Clash in the last summer of 1976 or even if we were cheated due to age in never seeing him the important piece is his music and his fire will stay with us until our respective number is up. I was even glad to learn this week that the Bloggette’s daughter now in Junior High was able to talk to her new history teacher about The Clash. She might not become a huge Clash fan (she currently likes some very dodgy shit) but she’ll use The Clash as her benchmark for what makes a great band who cared. That’s enough for me.

So I encourage you to please add comments below and I’ll update the blog regularly over the next 30 hours or so. Share you favourite memory, tell us what Joe means to you, send me a video or photo link. I’ll try and get them all included. My favourite Joe Strummer quote changes from week to week and the same goes for song and lyric, but this week I’m especially enjoying his time with the Mescaleros. Hence the video beneath and the quote from the Dick Rude film about Joe “Let’s Rock Again” when Joe is trying to hawk tickets to his concert coming up in Atlantic City. When confronted with a couple who can’t attend because they are flying home that evening Joe sharply states “Change your tickets!”.

Thank you Joe, I think of you daily and that’s been the case now since about this date in 1979, much of what I’d like to write I did last December – but essentially it was that we should be inspired by him – I know we were. Now it’s over to you!!!

I can’t even begin to describe how much Joe Strummer meant to me. One of the first musicians I truly looked up to. My biggest regret, is that I didn’t fall in love with the Clash and Joe Strummer until after he passed. Sure, I had heard the music, knew of the man, but not on the level that I do today. Every time I walk past that Joe Strummer mural in the LES outside of Niagara bar, I have to pause and pay my respects. One of my next pieces that I’m getting inked will be tribute to Joe Strummer.

Most people usually love a band for its frontman/woman. They don’t care about the rest of the band. In my case, it’s different. At first, I didn’t have any preference.
But then I saw that movie about Joe Strummer: “The Future Is Unwritten”.

It reveals us all the aspects of his personality, the good ones and the bad ones. And that’s what made me love him the way I do now, the way he just was, his qualities, his flaws, everything. He simply is an amazing man, the best songwriter in my opinion. He loved people and always took the time to discover them and ask them about their story. He lived for the music. He wasn’t as self assured as some would think. He had doubts, like everyone, he hesitated a lot before making his decisions. At first, he was lost when The Clash were finished. He wondered if there was going to be a life for him after the Clash. And after a lot of pain he had to deal with, he finally did it and moved on with his life: he proved to us all that his musical talent had absolutely no limits and that he could really do anything and go from one band to another without losing that special thing he has that makes him stand out of the crowd.

And even though I didn’t know him in person, I still feel like I know exactly what he was like. I miss him. From time to time I imagine how the world would’ve been if he were still alive.
More music, of course, but also more and more inspiration for all the people who, like me, look up to Joe and see a role model.

Sadly, I’m only 15 and would’ve never been able to see The Clash live back in those days… I still manage to stay happy with the music he left us behind.

My Joe Strummer line for today is “Must I get a witness for all this misery ? There’s no need to brother, Everybody can see…….You don’t need no silicon to calculate poverty” Sadly these words ring just as true as they did when I was hanging around outside Brixton Fairdeal listening to the Clash soundchecking twenty-nine years ago. Paul Simonon’s bass was pulsating through the ground I was standing on, as I was anticipating the gig that night. I was virtually first through the door…. Picture the scene though, on the 30th July 1982 at ‘The Kasbah Club’ which the Brixton Fairdeal became for the night…..early 6000 people crammed into a massive crumbling theatre. Mick’s Dad in the audience for the first time.

By this time they were the greatest rock band on the planet…. ….The lights dimmed and I was jammed up against the stage as the Ennio Morricone intro music faded, torches flickered as the band took to the stage and the place erupted as Joe Strummer called “Good Evening, Welcome !” and Mick Jones screamed 1,2,3,4 and THE CLASH launched straight into ‘White Riot’. The place went completely ballistic….. bodies, clothing, drinks and boots flying in all directions. Just typing this I’ve got shivers down the spine. I have a recording from that night on a old compact cassette. This wasn’t extortionate ticket prices to sit half a mile from the stage and beer a £5 a pint. This was £3 to get in to see one of the greatest bands of all time and you could touch Strummer’s guitar from where I was standing, jammed against the stage – no orchestra pit there !! It was very much in your face from the off. Power and passion never equalled.

It was 1978 my older brother was into the NYC Punk scene. He call me in his room to listen to a new band. It was the of course The Clash. Clash City rockers/Jail Guitar Doors single.I was hooked and couldn’t wait till they toured. Had to wait till 79 but it was worth it. They came and rocked the stage. First time I met Joe….Manchester Apollo..79..we took a bus from Newcastle drinking,smoking,speeding the journey away…then we arrive outside the Apollo..its about 3-4pm…walking round we saw the back doors open and people just going in and out unchecked..so…straight in we go..The Clash are soundchecking and we just stand infront of them as they go thro I Fought the law,Whiteman and Paul wants to do Bankrobber…it was incredible,we were buzzing…then this big thugs sees us and heads straight over..”You Out”..but the soundchecking stops..and Joe suddenly over the mike says ‘hey fuck,leave em alone’…Joe Strummer noticed us.!!!..it was the best thing ever,like the prophet saved his flock…then he came and sat stage right and talked for a short time,gave us some plecks and sent ‘hey fuck’to get us a tshirt each….thats Joe Strummer for you…

I once heard Billy Bragg say that every time he stepped on stage, he would pretend that he was The Clash. It’s a sentiment that I think many of us can relate to, whether we’re musicians or not. There’s a definite pull to be *somebody* or do *something* of merit, and Joe and the boys exemplified it. I’m not sure if a non-musician like me can rightfully have musical heroes, but that’s exactly what I consider Joe. I may be getting older and no longer look like the angry young punk I once did, but that fire still burns. Happy birthday Joe…the world is a blander place without you.

When I was 13 I had an English teacher who was the biggest U2 and Bono-fan. During one class we were talking about popular culture and were asked to each name an artist/band that we thought were important to the history of music. I raised my hand and said THE CLASH, his reply was “No, not big enough.” He went on to let someone else speak, and I raised my hand again and said, because I knew what a sucker he was for Bono “U2 probably wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for The Clash.” He ignored me and went on with the class. When class was dismissed he took me to the side and told me never to embarrass him that way in front of everyone. Therefore I continued making Clash references in essays, tests etc.

Welcome to Friday, especially good news after what was a short week for me but I still welcomed in the weekend with open arms. Hope all is well on your corner of the planet too. You might remember I was contemplating getting tickets to see The Psychedelic Furs and Tom Tom Club for old times sake next month. Today I found out the price of the tickets – a remarkable $57.50 per person. For $57.50 I’d want Richard Butler to buy me a few pints and let me jump on stage to sing Sister Europe. Still, I find myself in a tricky position as the Clash Bloggette really wants to go. Due to her age I get the feeling that the Furs might have been The Clash for her generation. A good band I’ll agree but a tough stretch to make that comparison.

So another day and another triumphant Big Audio Dynamite concert last night in Philadelphia by all accounts, in keeping with New York and Boston the previous two evenings. As it happens we also had a fair few Clash Blog regulars at the show in Philadelphia so I have a surplus of photographs and a video to share with you later. My favourite photo of all was courtesy of Brenda who was able to spend some time with Mick and Don last night and Don Letts was handed the piece of paper that you see to the left greeting Clash Blog readers. How bloody great is that? Thanks Brenda and thanks to Don for being game! I’m sure he was bemused but very nice of him all the same. Mick was given the same prop but managed to lose it – so that’s the task I set the rest of you – to hand Mick Jones a written message to the blog that he can hold up and get his picture snapped for blog readers. Over to you on that.

I love posts like this as the bulk of what needs to be said about last night is done via the photographs (courtesy of Jen and Brenda) and the same two aforementioned ladies who also put together a quick summary of the night’s events. Over to Brenda first – and thank you both for documenting what sounded like an exceptional evening and then spending the time to write the following:

(Brenda) – “Well that was an extremely great show. spectacular, tighter than ever, shimmering textures, gorgeous harmonies, tons of energy from Mick & Davo’s dancing & raging dual guitars, Don Letts has blossomed into a great presence, he’s all over the stage. the new songs were great , well received and the whole audience sang along on key for ‘Rush’ , the encore. I don’t know if it could have been better. As usual, no one is nicer to fans than Big Audio Dynamite.”

(Jen) – Last night I was lucky enough to see Big Audio Dynamite at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia. Aside from meeting a lot of awesome people, as well as the band, we were treated to an amazing show. The set list was great, and the band sounded so tight it was hard to believe they’ve only just started playing shows together again after such a long hiatus. Everyone on stage seemed excited to be performing again, with Mick joking and laughing with the crowd between songs. After the show the band came out and signed autographs for the crowd that had gathered by the bus. All in all it was a phenomenal show, and with the debut of a new song I can only hope that we’ll be hearing more from Big Audio Dynamite soon.
