An' one of 'em had a Les Paul Heart Attack Machine

Right then, Friday morning and we’re staring down the barrel of another summer weekend. In non Clash news the football season starts

It's up for grabs now...

tomorrow and I’m glad that the summer has finally passed as normal hostilities are resumed. I will always place the fact that you like The Clash above the poor taste you show in supporting Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool or Spurs. It does however shock me that following a club other than Arsenal is on anyone’s agenda. I know we aren’t what we used to be, our squad is too young, Wenger doesn’t spend enough money, but this has to be the year that total football is rewarded. I’ll try not to let the fortunes of Arsenal permeate the blog, but you’ve been warned. If you are a fan of the beautiful game there’s a handy poll over to your right where you predict this years champions elect. Speaking of competition we’ve got our 16th seeded song as Stay Free defeated Spanish Bombs on penalties by a final score of 11-7. Spanish Bombs goes into the knockout early but I still think we might see that song in the final 10. The Clash Cup Draw is tomorrow with first round match ups Sunday or Monday. (I’m not taking bets on a winner, any potential bookmakers feel free to have a bash).

Let’s see what else has filtered through these last few days to Clashblog central. Mick Jones Rock and Roll Public library under the Westway still has a short while to run, until August 23rd to be specific. Who knows when the next opportunity might be to see this collection so if you are in the South East please try and get along. Incidentally Viv Albertine from The Slits is performing at the library tomorrow full information is here.  Viv will be performing an acoustic set and Zoe Howe Street will be reading from her book about the Slits.  I can’t imagine needing more incentive to take the tube to Ladbroke Grove tomorrow, I only wish I could.

The Slits Book

Oh yes, I meant to mention that Facebook is also a good source for some more info, photos and thoughts about the Mick Jones exhibition. Both of these are good fun to have a look at, the original page and this campaign to get the show on the road (we can but hope).

From galleries to art and I do like this Joe Strummer piece by Daniel Edlen, and my goodness he’s even local (to me) in Gilbert, Arizona. Creating art from vinyl is his specialty so take a look.

Song of the day has to be All The Young Punks in honour of yesterday’s sad news about the death of Les Paul. I can’t draw an analogy strong enough to cite his influence to music as we know it, what a creative and dedicated man.

Finally, for those of you who twitter – and yes I do…I’ve formed a ‘twitter nest’ for Clash fans. The concept is we all nest there together and share Clash  ideas, or you can just tell me what sort of curry you ate last night. Either way join me here and start tweeting in The Clash nest!

This wonderful blog has finally upset me… The vision of Michael Thomas scoring THAT goal at Anfield has caused a complete about turn of opinion of our marvellous host here, namely Tim. It may have sealed an extremely lucky win for Arsenal that night in injury time, but even twenty years on the scar hasn’t healed. I can’t believe where the time has gone though. The US readers will have to forgive my indulgence here.
I’ve paid a personal tribute to the late Les Paul this evening by playing mine, annoying the kids and then the neighbours, playing along with various Clash classics….ranging from White Man to Stay Free (after all I did photograph Robin Banks this week) Complete Control, Tommy Gun, Safe European Home and Bankrobber…..He wasn’t just a solid body electric guitar pioneer but an innovator in multi-track recording too.
I saw Viv Albertine play last Friday and I’d recommend going down at the weekend if you possibly can. Viv live was very good indeed at the Inn On The Green and I would also suggest that Mick is probably back from his holiday in the Caribbean and could well be in attendance at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Public Library….

  2. A lucky win…? He should have scored earlier in the match if you remember rightly!! :-)

Defending all match when a draw would win you the league is why Dalglish no longer manages….sorry to ruffle you Pete.

    Tim

  3. Pete Stevens says:

Just winding you up too. Couldn’t believe Dalglish’s tactics, although it’s more difficult to tell as I only listened to radio commentary…..We needed to let someone else win for a change.

  4. Liverpool letting others win has become an 18 year habit mate….someone needs to stop the filthy mancs…

  5. Pete Stevens says:

Ah good, something to agree on at least ! Steering it away a little from football, I would buy Melody Maker, Sounds and NME on a regular basis. Couldn’t afford all three every week so I’d swap with friends. There definitely was something very ‘British’ about all three titles….definitely not Rolling Stone. The writing by many of the journalists in these titles was excellent AND critical; far removed from the huge amount of promotional pieces masquerading as reviews.

The entire music industry, and I’m including music publications here too, can’t seem to decide on a new working ‘model’ where it has enough income/revenue stream to continue employing the current number of people. There has been a democratisation in music and I’m yet to decide whether this is good. Just because you can doesn’t mean you necessarily should. Photography, my profession, is another good example. Sure you can go and spend $800 on a camera, but this does not make you a photographer. I’ve been shooting music for years, not because it pays well or at all, but because I love the music. I was inspired to do something.

  6. Karl says:

I’m one of those filthy Mancs, and before you or anyone else says it, NO, I’m not from Manchester. Gooners, Scousers, Chelsea, you’re all welcome to try and stop United, you all just have to up your game. Last season Mickeys took all 6 points, Arse 4 and Chelsea 1. but it’s no good beating United if you can only draw (or lose) to Hull, Stoke etc.
But I have to say, on that night back in ’89, how sweet it was to see Michael Thomas score that last minute goal.

  7. Karl – You’re still a good chap – I think when you’ve lost the best player on the planet you might be a bit softer this year. Good luck though!
    Tim

  8. Karl says:

I’ll try to be positive and as such will say that although he is undoubtedly the world’s best, United have won more trophies without him than with him. I’d have rather he’d stayed but that wasn’t to be. Not bitter or anything but I wish him all the success at Real that Beckham, van Nistlerooy, Heinze and Owen enjoyed there.
By the way, genuine congrats to the gooners.6-1 away at Goodison, for season curtain raiser, it don’t get much better. Mind you Tim, it’s about who’s top on the last day, not the first, eh?

  9. True – but teams (rightly) feared Ronaldo…a match winner of a player. That said I prefer Cesc as he usually gets on with the game. Today – a nice start – I was hoping for a 2-1, so a pleasant trouncing. Agreed….we need 30-34 performances just as efficient before I get excited. Arsenal were very physical today – good to see.
